Year 5: Grimmauld Place and the Toad

First I just want to start this by saying that Ron and I were made Prefects!! I am so surprised but SO excited for the opportunity!

This post is starting off with a bang. I was asked if I wanted to spend the summer with Ron at Grimmauld Place, which is Sirius' place. I wondered why Harry was not there, but I just assumed he would be coming in a day or so. And then we found out that all the adults (Professor Lupin, Mr. & Mrs. Weasley, Dumbledore, Sirius, Professor Snape etc.) were all part of this thing they called the Order of the Phoenix, and that it was basically a secret society dedicated to eradicating Voldemort. Of course, Ron and I weren't allowed to know any more than that, and also, when we went to write Harry a letter, we were expressly forbidden from communicating with Harry in any way! How unfair is that! The poor kid is probably so angry, thinking we all hate him or something!

When he did end up coming, he was extremely furious with everything. Like I said, not surprised there. Even when Ron and I explained that we were quite literally forbidden from writing to him, he still really did not calm down at all. Not that I blame him, but he was SO mad. His anger simply continued when he found that he was not able to know anything that was going on, and basically it was a painful few weeks, with a very touchy and angry Harry. Boys!

When we finally got back to school, we were all very interested to see who the new DADA teacher was going to be, as of course, we weren't having Moody back! There was this little lady seated at the front, who quite honestly looked like a toad, dressed in all pink. When Dumbledore was doing his speech, she kept interrupting, and I swear Dumbledore looked like he wanted to throttle her.

In classes with this toad (who was called Umbridge), we weren't allowed to have our wands out, all we did was read the textbook. Really. What on earth use it that?? I can read the textbook when I'm outside of class! I don't need to sit in class and have her watch me read it! It was, well, IS extremely stupid.

Umbridge is the worst DADA teacher we have ever had. And we have had an actual Death Eater, so that is saying a lot. Ugh.

The Triwizard Tournament: Part Two

One of the big events that everyone was buzzing about was the Yule Ball. It is a school dance that came along with hosting the Triwizard Tournament. It happened pretty close to Christmastime, and we all had to have a couple dance lessons with Professor McGonagall. It was a little awkward, but better than doing it with Snape I'd imagine! Anyway, everyone had to wear dress robes, which was kinda weird, as they more or less look like normal robes, but are a different colour, such as blue, or red, or something like that. And then, of course, all the boys suddenly realized that they had to ask someone to go to the dance with them. It was quite amusing actually, to watch them all struggle so much with that. Viktor asked me to go right after he found out that they had to ask someone. That's good because I couldn't wait for Ron or Harry to ask; it would have been AGES. Actually, Ron did sort of ask me at one point; he had the sudden realization that OMG, you ARE a girl Hermione! Really. I can't believe them.

Anyway, that happened, and I really enjoyed myself with Viktor. He is a sweetheart honestly. Ron was jealous, and THAT was also quite amusing! He and Harry asked the Patil twins, and neither girl really enjoyed themselves, but that is neither here nor there.

After that, it was back to schoolwork, and then the second task. Harry said he had been working on opening the golden egg, but honestly, I'm really not sure I believe him. I think he is just telling me that to get me off his back honestly. I'm pretty worried about the lack of effort that he is putting into this tournament. He is going to die if he isn't helpful.

Harry got the egg open the night before the task. THE NIGHT BEFORE! Boys! Honestly! Apparently, he was going to have to be able to be underwater for a while. We spent the entire night researching how to help Harry breathe underwater. We couldn't do full body transfiguration, we didn't know how to do that yet, and we couldn't find any plants, and we were running out of time. Finally we had to call it a night, and still had no idea what Harry was going to do tomorrow.

I was woken up extremely early and asked to meet in the Great Hall. There, we were told that we were part of the competition and that the individuals had to rescue us. I was very confused why both Ron and I were there. We couldn't both be the thing Harry would miss both? Either way, we were put into a trance and lowered to the bottom of the lake. I just hoped that everything would turn out alright, and no one would be hurt.

A while later I was woken up by breaking the surface of the water, and I looked down, expecting Harry, and there was this half-shark, half-human thing carrying me. Honestly, at that point, I just wanted to be onshore, and I really didn't care how I got there. Once I was there, I realized that this...abomination was Viktor...How could I be the thing he would miss most? I had only known him a couple of months. Weird.

It took Harry so long to come up, as he was the noble one who felt the need to rescue not only Ron but also Fleur's sister, as Fleur never came to get her. He didn't realize that we would have been rescued if the competitors didn't come to get us. Miraculously everything turned out alright, and everyone was okay.

And then came the last task. As we were all frantically trying to study, and focus on classes, the competitors were told that they would have to get through a maze and reach the Triwizard Cup, which was in the center. Seemed innocent enough, but they were going to fill the maze with all sorts of creatures and whatnot that people would have to get through. Harry, Ron and I spent weeks leading up to the task learning spells and different charms and hexes which might come in handy for Harry during the tournament.

The day arrived, and we all anxiously waited for the final task to be over. Harry and Cedric started first, having the most points from the other tasks, then Viktor, and finally Fleur. After what seemed like an age, red sparks came up, and Fleur was brought back to the front. Madame Maxime fussed over her and insisted on medical attention. A while later, more red sparks came up, and Viktor was brought back, quite grouchy and insistent that there were things in there that weren't fair.

Then we waited. And waited. And waited. It was ages and ages until Harry reappeared...carrying the cup and...Cedric? And he was crying? As he got closer, the crowd was looking at Cedric, being carried extremely awkwardly, not moving... was he unconscious, or...dead? When Harry reached the center of the stands, he laid Cedric down, and just collapsed on him, bawling, saying it was his fault over and over. Cedric was dead. But not from the maze, or from anything within the maze. No. The Triwizard Cup was a Portkey and had transported Harry and Cedric who apparently touched it at the same time to a graveyard, where Voldemort killed Cedric, and Harry had to watch him being reborn. It was brutal to hear, and poor Harry believed he was responsible. Then it was kind of a blur, but I remember being in Moody's office, and then he wasn't the real Moody? And the real Moody had been locked in a trunk for the entire year, and this imposter Moody had been using Polyjuice Potion to create this deception. The faux Moody turned out to be a Death Eater, and that is how the Cup had been turned into a Portkey and whatnot. It was a crazy story, hard to believe at first, but Harry's story corroborated it, as well as Cedric's body.

It has been a whirlwind of a year...and not necessarily in a good way.
